MercyOne identified a need in the Dubuque community for a comprehensive cancer center, where patients could receive all treatments at one location.
Company leaders worked with Origin Design to design a center where patients could receive outstanding clinical care, emotional support and guidance in a comfortable environment.
The cancer center was an addition to the east side of the existing Physicians Arts Plaza. The design included a long-cantilevered entrance canopy and asymmetrical walls.

project overview
The project included two radiation therapy vaults requiring thick lead shielding, resulting in a heavy structure that needed to be accounted for when designing the building’s foundation.
The building site was located on an existing parking lot. This required additional parking at an alternate location on MercyOne’s campus, and reconstruction of another parking lot in order to provide adequate parking during and after construction.
A critical aspect of the site design was site circulation. Origin Design worked with MercyOne to reconfigure traffic flow to allow for safe patient drop-off.
3D modeling was utilized to ensure adequate overhead clearance for bus traffic including two drop-off locations along the same route.
