The City of Shellsburg enlisted Origin Design’s help with a historic concrete arch bridge on Sells Street that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Due to the condition of the existing bridge, vehicular traffic was limited to 10 tons.
Origin Design staff initially completed a study phase to determine options to either replace or rehabilitate the existing historic structure. The selected option was to build a new vehicular bridge downstream on a new alignment. Public input solicitation, SHPO coordination, and coordination with the railroad further downstream was completed during the study. Renderings of a rehabilitated Sells St. pedestrian structure were completed to aid in the public input solicitation. The new structure downstream on realigned Smith Street will accommodate vehicular traffic and the existing historic structure on Sells Street will accommodate only pedestrians and bicyclists.
During design, in order to complete the required Iowa DNR Floodplain Development permit, hydraulic modeling was completed in HEC-RAS using survey-grade 3-D scans supplemented with traditional topographic survey to accurately model the existing Sells St. arch and downstream railroad bridge.
The new structure will be a 4-span 181’x30’ continuous concrete slab bridge on pile supported foundations and with a horizontal roadway curve on the north end. Custom tall concrete abutments were needed to provide the required hydraulic capacity and connect existing roadways.
