Creative design to introduce light and views, infusing new technology throughout the school.
Holy Family Catholic Schools partnered with Origin Design to direct and design the renovation of Wahlert Catholic High School. The school has been largely unchanged since its original construction in 1957.
Working alongside Holy Family administration and Wahlert High School faculty, Origin Design developed a design to replace a series of outdated and underperforming systems, improve energy efficiency, infuse new technology and flexible design into the science labs and throughout the building, open up the building to introduce more light and views, improve circulation, and update the food service area.
project overview
The majority of Wahlert’s exterior walls were a 1957 era glass curtain wall system that significantly falls below energy efficiency standards and had unsightly panels that continually peel paint. New block and metal panel exterior walls that include energy efficient windows that bring natural light into the classrooms, and the new metal panels and windows drastically improved the exterior appearance.
On the interior, a new central stairway better facilitates student movement throughout the facility, as well as brings natural light into the interior of the building. The wall separating the cafeteria from the main corridor has been completely opened up with glass that allows the natural light and views from the new outside wall to be shared all the way into the interior corridor. The new food service brightens the interior and offers the students a variety of food choices.
The classrooms and corridors have all been updated, including remodeled, state-of-the-art science rooms.
The plan also addressed the much-needed replacement of the roof, elevator and mechanical and electrical systems. New heating, ventilating and dehumidification systems provide comfort and improved indoor air quality throughout the building. The new electrical systems provide LED lighting in the classrooms and throughout the building which creating a more comfortable environment that is more conducive to learning.
“ There were a lot of creative ideas to let natural light in and make it a functional space without overdoing it. It’s becoming a place for community. Students want to go there and they are really taking care of it. ”
