An innovative solution to eliminate radium & meet state standards.
During a routine test on its raw water supply, the City of Bellevue discovered radium levels, while within the limits set by the EPA, were borderline high in terms of acceptability to the City.
Origin Design worked with the City to determine a Radium Removal Facility would be needed to mitigate the high radium levels.
project overview
The Radium Removal Facility houses vertical pressure filters that utilize the addition of hydrous manganese oxide (HMO) to the raw water to remove radium from the City’s two wells. The chemicals are injected into the treated water in one location in lieu of the two separate well waterworks buildings previously used.
A water main was installed with the project to route raw water from the wells to the facility. Various process piping and chemical addition were also installed.
The site selected for the facility had very poor soils.
Origin Design assisted the City in applying for a 75% forgivable loan for the project through the Iowa DNR. The City was awarded the loan to construct the facility. Origin Design also worked with the City to apply to the IDNR for SRF funding to cover the remaining cost of the project. We assisted the City in completing a PER, IUP application, and Environmental Review documents necessary for applying for SRF funding. Once submitted, Origin Design worked with the IDNR to get final approval for the funding.
Origin Design provided architectural, structural, civil and municipal engineering, as well as land survey for the project. Origin Design also provided construction administration and construction observation services during construction.
A special foundation was designed, utilizing steel piles and pile caps, to prevent substantial settling from occurring.
