Mary Abbott, Senior Design Technician, and Tasha Vondal, Project Support Specialist, have spent the past year working closely on DOT funded projects. Mary has shared her 40 years of expertise in contract administration, guiding Tasha through every phase of the process, from project setup and bidding, to construction administration, payments, and change orders. This collaboration reflects our commitment to mentorship, teamwork, and delivering consistent, high-quality solutions for our clients.

A major infrastructure upgrade is taking shape in Oelwein, IA. Origin Design’s team designed the new 10th St. SW replacement bridge, now under construction by Taylor Construction. For this Field Trip Friday, crews were setting 97-foot-long, 31 ton pretensioned prestressed concrete beams into place.

We were honored to celebrate the opening of the DeWitt Fire Station Addition and recognize 150 years of service to the community! From the hose-cutting ceremony and station tours to live demos and truck and equipment displays, it was a day full of pride, gratitude, and community spirit.
A huge thank you to the City of DeWitt and the DeWitt Fire Department for letting us be part of this milestone project. Here's to the next 150 years of service and safety!

Cody Austin and Josh Layer had a fantastic time at the 2025 Quad Cities Fall Engineering Symposium hosted by Society of American Military Engineers - Rock Island Post ! Cody took the stage to present on “Enhancing Land Development Communication through 3D Rendering and Visualization.”
He demonstrated how 3D rendering can transform complex designs into clear, engaging visuals, enhancing collaboration with powerful tools like Civil 3D, InfraWorks, SketchUp, Enscape, and AI. His insights highlighted innovative strategies to elevate communication in land development and strengthen connections with clients and the community.

Last week some of our engineers attended the Dubuque Gate & Pump Station Flood Mitigation Project Kick-Off! We're excited to be partnering with the City of Dubuque, Iowa, Portzen Construction and more on this phase of the Bee Branch Watershed Flood Mitigation Project.
The new facility will include a new flood gate, four new 100,000 gallon per minute pumps (double the capacity of the existing facility), new electrical service, and the installation of back-up generators.

Our transportation team worked with the City of Shellsburg to help determine the best outcome for this historic bridge. The result being the addition of a new vehicular bridge downstream, while the existing bridge was rehabilitated into a pedestrian bridge.

Origin Design's Land Survey team recently assisted with The Key Hotel site. We presented various options for modifying the parking lot, ultimately reconfiguring it for better flow in and out of the project site. An interim design was also created to support operations until full funding is secured for complete reconstruction.

Meet our Land Surveying Technicians: Jeff Winter, Chris Huseman, and Mark Nickolas!
With over 90 years of combined experience, they help collect data for locating land, infrastructure, and property boundaries. They take measurements, record notes, and assist with marking land for construction using tools like GPS and total stations. The job also involves drafting maps, researching legal documents, laser scanning structures, and handling equipment while working outdoors in various weather conditions. They ensure accurate measurements for projects and support engineers and builders with reliable data.

"In high school, I enjoyed drafting class and did well in math and science, which led me to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering at Iowa State University. After my first semester, I decided to shift my focus to civil engineering and the rest, as they say, is history. Now, as I mark my 31st year, I can confidently say that the most rewarding aspect of my career has been making a positive impact on people’s lives. Whether leading our team at Origin Design or collaborating with colleagues, developers, council members, or citizens, I’ve truly enjoyed the journey.
